History of the Marathon Flame
Marathon, Greece - The lighting of the altar of the Marathon Run, November 3, 2007 by the Marathon Champion Rosa Mota and the grandson of the first Olympic Champion Spyros Louis
The Marathon Flame was established on 3rd November 2007, the eve of the Athens Classic Marathon. A special ceremony was held near the Tomb of the Athenians dedicated to the warriors who fell in the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC.
The Marathon race and the Olympic Games have close links. The Flame of the Marathon Run burns as a symbol of peace and hope and serves to convey the Olympic ideals of fair competition and comradeship of people of all countries and races.
