The Battle of Marathon

The Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC, where the heavily outnumbered Athenian army defeated the Persians, thereby safeguarding both Greek and European civilization.

According to legend, a runner was dispatched to inform Athens of the victory after the battle. The runner made the 26 mile run in three hours but died after delivering his message. His effort is commemorated in the modern-day marathon which is 26 miles in length.

The Town of Marathon is located 42 km (26.09 miles) northeast from Athens, situated on the northeast coast of Attica the historical region of Greece containing Athens. It is the site of the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC.

Marathon is the only place to give its name to an Olympic event; the long-distance race, now known far and wide.
